Instructional Design: Module 1

Instructional Design: Model 1

As a dual-language facilitator teaching content subjects in Spanish and English, I have experienced the latest innovative learning approaches in education for the last ten years. One of the latest innovative educational approaches has been integrating online instruction for elementary students through a combined practice of Blended learning and The Cova Approach.

Designing and instructing online learning projects for elementary school students has numerous significant advantages, including personalized learning, a wide range of instructional resources, the promotion of digital literacy, communication and collaboration, flexibility, accessibility, and the ability to balance screen time. I invite you to watch the video below to learn more about instructional design.

Hello Doyna

Your instructional design is well-structured and effectively integrates blended Learning and the COVA approach to support second-grade dual-language students in developing their writing skills. The focus on digital writing journals provides students with an engaging and interactive way to document their learning journey while fostering creativity and critical thinking.

Outcome-Based Education (OBE) ensures clear, measurable learning objectives that align well with your instructional strategies and assessment methods. The balance between Assessment Of, for, and as Learning is well thought out, allowing students to receive continuous feedback, engage in reflective practices, and demonstrate their growth over time.

Your design promotes deeper Learning and student engagement by giving students ownership of their Learning while providing structured guidance. The combination of blended Learning and digital tools enhances accessibility and collaboration, ensuring students have meaningful opportunities to develop their writing skills in a supportive environment.

Dear Doyna,

Your course overview is very detailed. Combining outcome-based education (OBE), blended learning, and the COVA method, your approach is well-structured to foster student independence, collaboration, and creativity. Using digital journals is a great way to enhance writing skills while allowing students to reflect on their progress.

Your focus on measurable outcomes and ongoing assessments like peer reviews and self-evaluations will provide valuable feedback and support deeper learning. The alignment with institutional standards ensures your course is both practical and engaging for second graders in a dual language program. Overall, your approach seems well-designed to help students develop strong literacy skills in an innovative and student-centered way.

HI DOYNA,

Your instructional design approach demonstrates a comprehensive and forward-thinking plan for fostering literacy and creativity among second-grade students. Integrating digital writing journals within the curriculum reflects a modern and engaging way to help young learners develop essential reading, writing, and communication skills.

Using the Texas Essential Standards, ELPS, and district-specific guidelines ensures that the course aligns with state and institutional requirements. By adopting Outcome-Based Education (OBE), you have prioritized measurable learning outcomes that emphasize student mastery of writing processes and communication skills.

Your balance of assessments — “Of,” “For,” and “As” learning — highlights a thoughtful approach to both guiding and evaluating student progress. Including peer reviews, reflective practices, and ongoing feedback reinforces the importance of growth and development throughout the learning journey.

The blended learning model combined with the COVA approach (Choice, Ownership, Voice, and Authenticity) is well-suited for encouraging student engagement and personalization of learning experiences. By allowing students to research topics of their choice and collaborate with peers, you have created an environment that nurtures creativity, critical thinking, and self-expression. The emphasis on deeper learning is clear, as your plan promotes surface-level knowledge and an exploration of topics that matter to students, helping them develop both their writing voice and technical skills. Including a fully developed design map further shows how you think about your thoughtful planning and structured implementation.
