If one pays attention to the definition of the term disruptive, it means something that interrupts or discontinues a previously established process. On the other hand, the term innovation means something new and different, it means the need for a change in the way of doing things. It is amusing to see the juxtaposition of these words that are contrasting to each other; and yet, at the same time, complementary to designate a new way of teaching or, I would say, a new way of learning instead. Changing the way our students learn is important and needed, because we have the need to adapt, adopt, and promote the advantages that new technology offers us. For example, when implementing blended learning classrooms, we can reach more students beyond our territorial scope.
We can also offer our students the most skilled professors to teach a certain subject. Another advantage of disruptive innovation is that education can be made affordable for many. As Michel B. Horn stated, blended learning is disruptive because school districts and teachers need to be adequate in imparting and delivering academic content through online instruction, taking into account that students will have the flexibility of time, pace, and path of their studies. It is also interesting to observe the different blended learning models that have been proposed for middle and high schools, as well as elementary schools.
I will implement the Station- Rotation Model since I teach in a second-grade classroom. Most importantly, every blended learning environment should be designed with the students' outcomes in mind. Disruptive innovation will help teachers and instructors personalize students' performance since online instruction is delivered in an individualized manner. Once this new educational approach is implemented, it will bring positive results, and everyone else will follow it.
