One of the most common obstacles instructors confront is getting students to assimilate knowledge, apply it to real-world issues, and put it into practice. How can we, as teachers, help our pupils apply their knowledge in Bloom's higher cognitive domains? How do we encourage our children to analyze, synthesize, evaluate, and create? The solution is creating learning settings that enable students to form personal connections by applying knowledge to real-world challenges, as Ph.D. Dwayne Harapnuik explains at Creating Significant Learning Environments (CSLE)
Now, let's consider the benefits of e-portfolios in the context of student learning. An e-portfolio is a digital resource that enables learners to internalize knowledge concepts, allowing them to engage with and own their learning experiences. It's not just an artifact for storing information but a resource for students to actively engage with their learning. The question should be: when does the apprentice take ownership of the content and ideas in his/her portfolio? Potentially, the solution lies in the learner's ability to implement the acquired knowledge to resolve problems.
